I create a primary formatted partition on the secondary or primary HD to save the backup image, then copy it from there to the external.

This way there is a recovery partition that is easily detected from the booted Win7 DVD Repair console to reimage the HD, and an external backup in case HD is disabled.

This may be a nothing answer but are you using your AC power supply when backing up?
It always a good practice if it available to have external power on.

    My 2 cents

Hi there, I have an Acer Aspire X1300 that I recently got and was unable to backup to an external hard drive. If I backed up to another partition on the internal it worked fine, but this wasnt a good enough solution for me, so I trwled around the internet for hours and hours and discovered there is an issue with external mass storage connected via usb when using the nvidia chipset found on the X1300 motherboard. On the Microsoft support site I found KB976972. I follwed the instructions to get this hotfix and since installing it I have backed up 100% successfully to external drives. This also cured the problem I had of moving large data files such as HD video to my externals.
    Hope this helps.

    Read this

check if Volume shadow copy and windows backup services are running and set to automatic in Services Console.

    1. Click on Start, type Services in Start Search. When the Services page is open, scroll the page to find Volume Shadow Copy and Backup service.

    2. Right click on them and check if they are started.

    3. If the services are disabled, start the services and set it to Automatic and check if the issue gets resolved.

If the services are running and you get Error Message: “0x8007007B - The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect”, file name or volume label has special characters.

I just helped someone with a similar problem not the exact same error code but close the below solved the issue maybe it will help you

    The system does not accept the keyboard combination Alt+0 through Alt+32 or the following characters: \\ \\ / [ ] : | < > + ; = . ? "

This gives the system an invalid path, so please correct the file name or volume label and make sure the username you are logged into has no spaces or special characters and then try to perform the backup.

It would also be caused due to Operating System shell corruption. If your file name and volume does not have any special characters and you are getting this error message, Create a new user account and perform the backup from the new user account and let us know if it helps.
