Do you really need another backup program (Acronis)

Since Win 7 has a backup program, is there any reason to use Acronis True Image?

I have an older version of True Image and can upgrade to True Image 2010 at the upgrade price, but is it really necessary to do that?

Depends upon what you want. The acronis program has more flexibility and functionality. I picked it up recently for $23.99 from Newegg and have really benefited from some of the extra functionality for that price.

The Try and Decide function is pretty slick. The non-stop backups for some could really be useful. For me, the biggest bang for the buck is the ability to restore the image to a computer with a smaller hard drive..which you cannot do with the built-in Windows tool. I just wish that it would handle my Linux partitions as well.

The very simple answer to this question is .......

    yes

    and to the last,,,

    maybe

It depends on what you need/want in a backup utility.
Acronis (while may produce problems for some) is pretty damn solid software.

Historically the Windows backup/recovery facilities did not do so well. Now there are first reports of trouble with the Win7 facility. I would opt in any case for Acronis (although I myself use Macrium and Norton Ghost).
