System Restore never creates 'am system checkpoint'

The MS page there is also one consideration while not wishing to make Vista or 7 invisible while booted in XP for various reasons. But that means still putting up with...

NOT SO GOOD:
The registry entry seen at the MS page as well as the instant restore point mod unfortunately failed here and still sees Vista and 7 points wiped. 7 presently being seen as D with Vista on another as G didn't help there.

After confirming the entry was seen in the XP registry both the 7 and Vista primaries were still accessible not off limits according to the MS page.

Hello Camineet.

I know that this can be done as a written script, but this is something that I have never taken the time to figure out as it's just easier to add THIS (Option One, #2) to the start menu, startup folder to create a restore point at boot up, I also have a shortcut for this on the desktop to create a restore point with one click.

I've known about this and I've been wanting to give the MS info a go, but I have so much going on now it's hard to find the time to start something new, besides, I'm afraid XP is a dying entity.

Hi Bare Foot Kid,

A script is necessary? That doesn't sound quite right. I'm no expert, but I would think that any shortcut should successfully run.

Just to get my hands dirty and get some first time experience with Task Scheduler, I created a shortcut of an mp3 song. Then I created a new task and added an action. The action was to run a program. I clicked browse and chose the shortcut to the mp3 song. Then in the list of tasks I right clicked the newly created task and enabled it. Then I right clicked it and chose Run. The song played.

Why won't the Create Restore Point shortcut work without a script?

One more thing I should add - unless I'm reading your message wrong, I should mention that I really want to have Restore Points be automatically created without me having to restart my system.

Hello again.

There's one way to find out, give it a go; but if it takes you "one" click to activate the task, wouldn't it be easier to just use the instant restore point creator I linked? That way you could have a point created at boot up and a shortcut on the desktop as well for use when needed.

Be sure to keep us informed what you come up with!

What I mean is, that I would like to use the tutorial you linked. And then once I have that shortcut, I'd like to create a task that is scheduled to run everyday at a certain time. It seems to me like it should work, but I would like to have gotten some kind of confirmation from a qualified expert or at least someone with more expertise than me, which is most anyone on this kind of forum.

I've become so fearful of installations that I exhaust all possible inquiries before actually 'just trying things'. But I guess that's what I'll be doing on this one.

As far as the value of the shortcut goes, I'm not so convinced. It's another installation on top of all the other apps I need in order to run my company and enjoy media on my pc, and all this additional installation does is save me the trouble of hitting the start key and typing 'create restore point' and then clicking a few more times and typing in a name. I'd prefer the extra 5 clicks or so if I'm going to do a manual create restore point. But since I really need my system to be automatically creating 'am system checkpoints' like 'ole XP did for me, I'm willing to install this script and create a scheduled task from the shortcut it generates.

Not that I wish to differ with you for any reason. I'm just making some intelligent(?) debate about the value of the script:)

Don't be concerned about having a different opinion, you know what is said about opinions ...

Seriously, I tried all you're working on in my old 32-bit Vista to no avail; I never did get it to create restore points on its own and I tried everything. Who knows, Windows 7 may be different than Vista in that it will create restore points through the task scheduler as it's supposed to do.

Like I said, I'll be interested to see your outcome.

Unfortunately I still need XP running here since the tuner card industry never bother to write softwares for seeing video recorded or captured in Vista. I'm able to get the picture and sound working on 7 as well as Vista with the updated driver but forget about the software side!

For the instant restore point mod I pinned the shortcut to the 7 taskbar and no go there. Instead you see a script icon appear and nothing happens when clicked. Repeat sets of restore points still get wiped for the weekly boot into XP while Vista and 7 are the default OSs on each drive depending which is set as default.

The other mentioned before hides Vista from XP making any Vista partition vanish from view. That seems to how that protects Vista restore points. Here however I still want access to Vista and 7 partitions for moving copy files back and forth for various programs being tried out on 7 without a major fuss. So much for restore points however.

You know that as well as I do. I used to dual boot with older versions where there were no restore points to even consider!

3.1/95, 95/98, later 98/XP followed by the XP/Vista now XP/Vista/7 etc.

I was simply pointing out that nothing seems to prevent loss with custom setups across more then one drve apparently. It would have been nice to see 7 get past that problem however.

The Task Scheduler service along with all of it's dependent services will not stop or start.
Related services are
RPC call
DCOM launcher

This was observed right after a clean install and before anything else was done.

I presume this is the reason I dont get a daily system restore and maybe why the reliability monitor is not working.

Windows 7 x64

Anybody seen this or have a solution.
