Backup Partition

Hi! I'm currently running Vista Home Premium and I've just downloaded an upgrade version of Windows 7 Professional.

To install this I need to do a clean install, but I do not have anything large enough to store all of my files on during the install. However, my hard drive is currently divided into two partitions, one with Vista (C) and all of my program data on, the other with my files (D).

I've been told that by keeping the files on the D partition, they are safe from the clean install which would go on the default C partition.

Is this correct?

I was planning on installing using the application as opposed to the ISO on a DVD simply because I do not have any DVDs :)

As a precaution it is always best to backup all your data before doing the installation on your computer just in case something wrong happens. ideally a partition will work as a separate space to store your data but its still on one HD so this may not guarantee the safety of your files.

if you have a friend that has an external drive that you can borrow to backup your files that would be best before you proceed.

Ah cool. Yeah I'm trying to find someone with a drive I can borrow.

I just don't want to lose my data.
