    System Restore Keeps Resetting

I want system restore off by deafault. (Which I currently have set)

BUT, every couple of months system restore magically turns itself back on?

    What am I doing wrong?

Some utilities turn it back on for example when you compact the registry. There was once a service pack that turned it back on also.

I check it once in a while and haven't seen it go back on in a month or so.

I agree with the prior poster, but what you may also want to do is go to the task scheduler and cancel the schedule that is shown. In the event that system restore is turned back on, it will not make any restore points. You will not even know that it is on.

Installing or uninstalling programs often say "creating restore point"... could that be turning it on?

Seems like windows 7 is still working on some bug fixes...

    Just installed this update yesterday...

An update is available to improve the stability and the reliability of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

If you resize the shadowstorage to 300MBs (which is the allowed minimum), it cannot really write any restore points (shadows). Just move the slider in Sytem properties > System protection > Configure.

Seems like this problem was related to a specific malware that "wanted system restore on"
