Internet data backup service - recommendation?

Does anyone here use an internet backup service worth recommending? I would like to try a free service, but with about 70-80 gigs, I expect I'll probably have to pay. I keep images on an external drive, but I would like an off-site backup too.

    Thanks,
    Rusty

Used and liked by a friend. They often have promotions free for a year etc.

Carbonite is also recommended by someone that I listen to and trust.

I sometimes backup important documents on my Skydrive account. But there is a limit of 50MB per upload (25GB total storage). So it would not qualify for a complete system image. I would also be worried about the time it will take to upload such a massive amount of data.
An alternative is to burn an image to CDs and put them into your bank safe deposit box - or leave them in someone elses house.

I found Carbonite confusing & they will not BU some file formats. Been using Dropbox for about 6 weeks - really like it!

Have you considered just purchasing a second external drive and keeping that offsite? That's what I do. I keep 1 drive at home and 1 drive at work and just rotate them back and forth frequently.

While using an online site is something I have considered, my general lack of upload bandwidth to the Internet makes it prohibitive to do. Plus, I'm a little leary about my personal information being stored somewhere in the cloud.

I'm with PParks on this one... I would be very concerned about putting information important enough to warrant double backups on any storage medium that is not under my direct control.

60 gigs is only a couple of thumb drives, unless it's all one big file. Even, as suggested, a second portable HD would be better than entrusting valued information to the hands of total strangers.

I personally know one person who claims his spam levels trippled right after he opted for internet backup... it's obvious they scanned his data (car club contacts and photos) because he was inundated with advertising about cars, car parts, travel destinations, etc.

    So... caveat emptor... buyer beware.

I didn't even think about this potential...but this totally makes sense...especially for the free or very low cost solutions. They have to be getting revenue from some source...so it's potentially spammers and such who are interested in what type of data a particular person might have.

Yep, it's a server connection, no visible advertising to get revenue from. That really only leaves them one source... Selling mailing lists.
