I tried a Macrium Reflect image restore of 2 partitions (100M system, c: 490G).
I wanted to select the 2 partition boxes but Macrium would only select one - I tried control clicks etc. Can I only restore one partition at a time?
Whilst you can image several partitions at one time, you can only restore one partition at a time. Reason is because you have to specify whether it is active or primary and whether to replace the MBR or not. But the 100MB partition should not be backed up anyhow. It contains the MBR and that is universal. See also the warning in my tutorial.
WHS is right, you simply have to do the restores 1 partition at a time. Threw me for a loop at first as well..since I have used other apps which allow me to do multiple drives at once. But other than that, it's a solid application and has served me well.
When I use Macrium reflect to burn an image, it ask me to back up which images, and I just just check the main partition of C, and exclude this small hidden parititon. Is this a mistake? I am confused. I have not had to restore yet, but I would like to back up correctly, so if and when I need to restore, I will know what I am doing.
I used Acronis for years, but it just copied the entire hard drive to the external drive, and used the whole extenal drive. Then I could actually just put the extenal drive into the laptop as a last resort, or restore from the external to a new internal. How is macrium different?

If you are trying to use Macrium to backup your entire machine to restore later, you will want to backup the C drive as well as the 100MB system reserved partition.
I only backup the partitions I want. That does not include the 100MB partition. But you can back that up too - just remember that this is your active partition. But you need to restore them one by one - at least with Macrium because of the reasons explained above.
basically, if you're backing up to have something to restore in case your *current* machine's system partition goes south, the one you're interested in backing up the most is C:.
If you're backing up for the purpose of moving to another HD, you'll want both.

Well. I'm really confused now. I used to clone with acronis. Now, I image with Macrium. If macrium is not good for a new hard drive, what's the point? Do I need to go back to Acronis in case of a dead HD and I need a new one?
