OK, here's how I did it:
Being gun-shy and not wanting to destroy the MBR on the C: drive I figured that since there were two MBRs, one on C: and one on G:, I would go into DISKPART from the Win 7 install disk and 'inactivate' all drives except C:.
During the reboot after I did this, I went into the BIOS and disabled all drives in the boot sequence except the DVD and C: drives, figuring that this would likely force the system to boot from the MBR on C:, which, apparently, it did.
Then I used Acronis delete the partition and zero out the G: drive. And, wolah, I now have only one system image in backup (see attached).
