    WLM 2011 Storage Folder problems

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium and using Windows Live Mail 2011 and recently have started having problems with e-mails in my WLM Storage Folders. Some folders have become corrupted such that the e-mail headers, subject, date, etc appear correctly but all the e-mails in one folder have the same contents.

I generally use the Move To function or occasionally drag and drop e-mails from my Inbox to the relevant Storage Folder but in both cases some of the recipient storage folders are now corrupted and effectively my stored e-mails are now "lost".

Fortunately I had archived my e-mails fairly recently using Mailstore Home (free) so can access those that are now corrupt in WLM but I am concerned why this has happened since everything else appears to be working normally and virus/malware scans have not shown any problems.

    Any suggestions?

Hi wyaad1, welcome to Windows Seven Forum.
I suggest you change tactics instead of looking for a solution.
If you open an email, click file and save as, you can store them on an external hdd. or wherever you like.

Go to Programs and Features, highlight "Windows live Essentials" and select "uninstall/change" at the top. In the next window choose a repair to repair all installed components of of the Essentials package, including Mail. The 2011 version of WLM is buggy and that repair process fixes some things but since I haven't heard of this folder corruption problem, I can't say for sure it would prevent it.

The maintenance section of the general options for WLM has a "Message Store" option to tell you where to find the individual messages within Windows Explorer. This should be unaffected by the repair but you may be able to look there to see if your messages are there. (Although the titles are not descriptive, you can click on the *.eml files to look at them.) That would be another way to verify that they are really just duplicates of one another.

RONCERR, Thanks for the response. I had already tried the repair option without success but have tried again in any case. The problem messages are still in the message store but WLM will not open them although a program called Free Opener will and the messages are all the original versions not dubplicates!

I have been using WLM for about a year and found it to be very good so it is extremely disappointing to have these problems. The suggestion by Roderunner above is a work around but not particularly elegant - a bit like moving out of your house to a tent in the garden because your roof is leaking, you may stay dry but it doesn't fix the problem.

I think a better work around is to save messages to Files folders and then at least they are backed up and available on-line which is what I have started to do in the interim.

If you highlight the items in your storage folder, you can use 'Move to' feature to put them in location you choose.

I have managed to restore my messages by copying the folders/messages from the WLM storage location to another fodler then deleting the WLM files and generally tidying up the WLM storage location before copying the folders messages back again. All messages are now readable correctly so I would appear to be back to normal.

I still don't know what caused the problem but hopefully it is a recovery solution should the problem happen again. Thanks for the input which help encourage me find a solution.

In order to move it you have to move it to a particular storage folder (actually sub folder) like inbox, draft, or one you created yourself. Those subfolders are visible under Storage folders if you click on the triangle next to the phrase "Storage Folder".
