How to establish personal files for emails in Widows Live Mail

When I was using Vista & XP, I had Personal Files on the left side bar to store my emails that I wanted to keep from Outlook....very convenient. I can't figure out how to do this with Windows Live Mail. Can someone please tell me how to accomplish this?

    Thanks!

I'm not really sure what you're asking. Outlook allowed you to create an offline .pst file that you could move e-mails out of your active account and into an offline area, which would show up as a separate Personal Folders section along the left pane. Windows Live Mail doesn't have this functionality, so if you truly need this for some reason, you'll need Outlook.

    Hi Deacon,

You nailed it, that's exactly what I was asking...just didn't phrase it correctly. Can you create an offline file somewhere else that you can save emails to? I don't really want to go to the hassle of changing to Outlook?

    Thanks!

I use Windows Live Mail myself, on three computers for my IMAP account, and I can't say I've ever seen an option for offline files with it. That's an Outlook feature. Switching to Outlook shouldn't be a problem since it seems you've used it already. In fact, it might even be able to import your settings.

On a side note, very very few people have resident e-mail stored locally on a computer anymore. Most people are moving away from doing this, such as using IMAP accounts now.

Windows live mail doesn't have personal folders, offline folder files etc. But, it does cache the incoming mail onto your harddrive. If you look into (i believe its, and depending on settings "C:\users\username\local settings\application data\microsoft\windows live mail" you will see a top folder named after the IMAP/pop3 account and a folder called 'storage folders'. Once in this folder there should be other folders named after the server folder(s), containing .eml or .dbx files. Each one of these files contain message data etc.

-Depending on what you want to do with the local EML's, there could be a hundred different ways to backup the files, segregate, re-index etc. How come you want to have a personal folders, like in Outlook? Is it so you can move them from the server, to local storage (to save space on the server)? I believe if you move a message from the WLM (IMAP) account, and put it into your a storage folders (via the WLM client) it should save those files even thereafter...since it's in the storage folder. Test it out and get back to me.
