Disabling POP3/IMAP Authentication Failed Error in Windows 7

I'm looking for help with the following error message in Windows 7:

"Error: Authentication failed. Please check your user name and password for the accountEmail removed for privacy "

Background: I had set up IMAP through Outlook 07 to retrieve mail from a former business e-mail account. I recently shut down the business, so I discontinued my domain registration and removed the e-mail address account from Outlook 07. Despite this, I still get this error message about every 5-7 min on my PC. Where do I go in Win7 to remove this constant checking of this no longer working e-mail address? Also, for another e-mail address I have set up for POP3 that is still active, I get the same error message when I'm not connected to the Internet. I'm thinking (and hoping) that where ever I need to update to remove the inactive email account, I can also set it so my active e-mail account has e-mail retrieved only when connected to the Internet. Though I set this up in Outlook 2007, the error messages seem to be Win 7 messages (occur whether Outlook is open or not).

    Here are my PC Specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium , 64 bit
    Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
    Processor Count: 2
    RAM: 3003 Mb
Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, 1309 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 227287 MB, Free - 149859 MB; D: Total - 11182 MB, Free - 1874 MB; G: Total - 953867 MB, Free - 919957 MB; K: Total - 238472 MB, Free - 8651 MB;
    Motherboard: Wistron, 3612, 09.66, 2CE9249M8G
Antivirus: Norton 360, Updated and Enabled

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I am using Windows Live Mail, which is basically the same as Outlook Express, and live mail; will assume the same as Outlook 07l
Go to tools, accounts and delete the problem account.
In LIve Mail its at the top with File, Edit, and View.
    '
Look around you will find it.

    Thanks, but still need help

Richc46 thanks so much for the quick feedback. I neglected to mention in my original post that I had already deleted the e-mail account in the manner you suggested. That's what make this so weird--my PC keeps checking the POP3/IMAP account and it is no longer listed as an e-mail account in Outlook 2007.

Open to any and all suggestions.

    Download and run this
Piriform - Download CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, Speccy - Millions of users worldwide!

That account was not fully removed
    Clear cookes
    Use disc cleanup
    Delete temporary files
Shut down the computer and boot up

When all is said and done I think the ccleaner will do the trick, I think there are remnants in registry which will be removed.

Was it POP3 account or IMAP?

I had several ideas, as above.
