Opera calls for browser extension standard

Quote:
With extensions coming to Opera 11, the Norwegian browser maker says it's time to consider making the technology a standard for all browsers.

That's because Opera 11 extensions will use the same collection of Web page technologies--HTML for page contents, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for formatting, JavaScript for processing--as extensions in Google's Chrome, Apple's Safari 5, and Mozilla Firefox's upcoming Jetpack. The approach generally makes it easier for at least lightweight extensions, and browser technologies handle the interface.

I'm not certain if this is a good thing for me or not. I know that FF and some other browsers use extensions, but I have never had the desire to delve into them. I have read where some have complained about the complexity of having to install a multitude of extensions, and getting them to work properly. I have no doubt that some of these are worthwhile...at least to some people, but exactly what does extensions offer that Opera is not already capable of?

Extensions should be easier to write & certainly a lot easier for the less technically able to install.

If you had an extension standard then it would be easier for authors to make them cross browser.

This will hopefully be a good thing for Opera. I was an Opera user for many years but in the end (around version 9.0) i got tired of the company's inability to listen to the users. I remember arguing for such a simple feature as autocomplete in form fields that a lot of users where wishing for just resulted in long forum threads. Opening up Opera to extension developers is a way to give the users an alternative to get what they want.

I am happy with Opera's built in usability, but having some possible extension options would be nice. A Guy

Well, I've got the v10.70 build 9071 snapshot installed so hopefully the v11 builds featuring extensions will be out soon...

"This is the last 10.70 build. Being a 10.70 build it does not include extensions. The first build with extensions will be an 11.00 build and we'll get it to you as soon as possible."

Opera 11 Alpha has been released and it benchmarks over 250 points higher on the Peacekeeper Browser Benchmark than v10.70 did on my Win 7 x64 computer! Out of the limited offering I've only installed 1 extension so far.

I just tried Peacekeeper with 11, but even though it at first appeared to be running well, it finished with the following result"

Quote:
Could not find result for key 4ZpY. If you trying to benchmark another browser please make sure you have copied the url correctly and try again.
I have no idea of what that means?

EDIT: I ran it again, and it completed but didn't score well at all. Maybe it's due to my old hardware. I also ran it in 10.63, where it did about the same, so I'm fairly sure that the hardware is the difference.
