Windows 7: windows live mail 2011 with Windows Live Messenger 2009

I'm having the opposite problem, I hate both mail and wlm 2011. Unfortunately Microsoft is forcing me to upgrade my version of WLM or it won't let me log in now. I hate this plan because wlm2011 sucks royally for all the reasons listed above. So being forced to upgrade I'm looking for a way to only upgrade wlm and NOT mail. I hate wlm 2011 because alot of the customization options are removed. I have tried to JUST dl Wlm but it ALWAYS runs the esstials upgrader which will force me to upgrade everything if I allow it to run. Does anyone know where I can download and installer that's JUST for wlm and not mail? I was runnign 2009 wlm but as with previous versions of it they're now forcing me to "upgrade" in order to log in anymore. If you ask me thier upgrades are more like downgrades and I don't like the idea that they're trying to "simplify" things by upgrading all programs and sticking it into a little package where we no longer get the choice. Is there a download for JUST wlm that's not an essentials installer?

Unfortunately, Microsoft uses the term "mail" in too many contexts. For users of the downloadable software suite "Windows Live Essentials" (either 2009/2010 or 2011), the component they call "Mail" is "Windows Live Mail". There is also something called "Windows Mail" which came with Vista. Windows 7 did not come with a mail program, so those of us who want one are expected to use the one that comes with either of the Essentials Suites. But I'm still using WLM (2009/2010) and have not been asked to upgrade. I can log in either through WLM or directly on the Hotmail website. Of course when logged in via the web interface all I can see is the current Hotmail interface in the browser. If you are OK with the older version of WLM and just don't want 2011, you need to remove the "Windows Live Essentials" Suite from Programs and Features (which includes all its other components as well). Then go to the link I provided in Post #12 for the older suite and download and install the "Mail" (WLM) component from there.

Unfortunatey when they first came out with 2011 my system auto-updated and I hated it. At that time I hadn't found a dl link for 2009 and had to a system restore to get it back, and well that kind of broke the uninstaller and I don't know how to fix it. I go to add/remove programs and and click on windows live essentials, click uninstall and nothing happens. I click on change and nothing happens. So not sure how I can revert. I am happy with 2009 live mail and don't want to lose it, but am being forced to upgrade to messenger 2011 against my wishes since I can't log in via the program anymore. The only good thing about being forced to installer messenger 2011 is that I was hoping in doing so it'd fix the issues brought about by the system restore previously.

Roncer: I'm not sure what you mean about logging into messenger via the hotmail website. I know you can use web messenger and access hotmail from there but that doesn't help my issue. My email account isn't with hotmail, but I use the windows live mail program on my laptop as it is running windows 7. Not sure why it is refusing me login to the program when it isn't doing the same for you, that is a bit confusing. The exact message I get is as follows:

A Newer version has been downloaded and is available. You must install this newer version in order to continue. Would you like to do this now?
*Yes
*No
What's new... Ok

Yes and no are option bubbles. What's new and Ok are action buttons. If I choose no and click ok it prevents me from logging in. If I choose yes and click ok it launches the WLE installer which willl force upgrade my live mail program as well. Don't know how why it says downloaded the newer version becasue I had that update blocked on windows updates and it has not been downloaded. So I am rathe confused.

Any suggestions or thoughts on how to get around this given my situation?

I don't use or login to Messenger. What I meant was, at least for WLMail (the only part of Essentials I chose to download and install) there was never even a suggestion that I upgrade. Windows Update has never offered me an update to the 2009/2010 "Windows Live Essentials" suite. And when I login to the Hotmail website, there is no mention of upgrading anything except to inform me of "improvements to Hotmail". However, if you somehow managed to get WLM 2011 downloaded and installed, you need to uninstall it completely before you can use the previous version. Perhaps you should let the system do the update to 2011 it seems to want to do, check it out, and if you still don't like it, then try to use Programs and Features to uninstall it.

I think the problem is that Microsoft is forcing the upgrade to 2011 for Messenger and since we can't mix and match components, it amounts to forcing us to upgrade the entire suite just to continue to use Messenger. At least one person has suggested using a non-Microsoft Messenger program like aMSN from SourceForge.net

Great little piece of information that I was looking for.
