You asked for opinions, so here's mine:

I can understand if a small kid wants to use Incredimail to make his / her mails look "cool" with pretty pics and animated smileys and so on.

If email is to you more a way to communicate than a medium to show how cool messages you can create, Incredimail is not for you. This, of course, is just my subjective opinion.

This old granny loved it. I am hearing impaired and loved the butler walking across the screen to announce mail.

However, something bad happened, I don't know what and it is unusable now. These pop ups just keep popping up, I don't have a clue what it's about.

Used IncrediMail when it first came out because it was different and cute. Haven't used it in years so I don't know what they have added or made changes to.
From what I've heard and read it is not for me.
Bottom line is try it...........it's free...........and you can always remove it later on when you get feed back from your contacts.

    Try a System Restore.
    Tutorial if you need it.
    System Restore

If it started acting up yesterday for example select a restore point from the day before yesterday.
It won't lose any of your info. Easy to try first.
