I was looking around for a fix for IE crashing and found this Microsoft link: FIX: Windows Internet Explorer 7 may crash when you use it to visit a Web site . I ran the fix and it's worked, so far. IE has not crashed since!

    Hopefully it works for you.
I found I had periods of increasing confidence until it would fail again.

This last time for me (an hour ago) was when Windows used IE as the default to view an xml file.

I now have IE8 disabled. Windows will apparently still use its core functions when required.

It's been about two hours since the "fix" and, so far IE hasn't crashed. This afternoon, it got pretty bad. I'll bet it crashed a dozen time in half-an-hour. Hopefully, this will cure the problem. Incidentally, the "fix" identified a problem in my AVG anti-virus. I ran an AVG scan after the M/S program and it identified three Dell driver updates with bad signatures.

    We'll see . . . . .

That fix is for IE7. IE8 doesn't have a "UseCoInstall" key. But if it is there for some reason maybe changing the value to "0" is the same as deleting it.

I dunno. I was willing to try anything and, again, it seems to be working fine. There have been no crashes since I did that. Anyway, the program identified an AVG problem and I went through the steps to correct it. I've done three AVG scans plus all 7 of my malware programs and everything seems fine. Fingers crossed!

Update: IE is working fine and there have been no problems since the much-hoped-for fix.
