For general purpose minimize to tray I like this free AutoIt3 script, WinTray. Just hold down Shift key when you click on the minimize button in the window frame.

MS does not allow this feature, but contrary to what some in this thread THINK is normal and what is idiotic, I, like you, want the ability to hit the "X" and minimize the app to the system tray. Since MS doesn't see fit to offer this option, the best alternative is to install a tiny app called "POP Peeper." It will check your mail, notify you of new mail and allow you to "X" Windows Live Mail upon exit. Try it - you'll like it. And for you "Jr. wiz kids" who think this person's question is idiotic, I submit to you that I have been in the computer business for well over 30 years, including managing several support groups at Microsoft! Some of us want things done "our way," regardless of what you feel is ludicrous.
