Hello paul malherbe and welcome to SF!

Windows is looking for an installed e-mail client. For example, Outlook, Thunderbird, Incredimail, Eudora, to name a few.

Once you have done that, you will use that client for those types of outgoing e-mail.

You can still set Gmail to pick up that e-mail so your can read your incoming mail at Gmail.

Hope that was clearer than mud. :)

    Hello Paul
I don't know if this will work but have a read and remember gmail is not a programme so making it your default I think is not an option

How to Make Gmail your Default Email Program in Windows 7 : Sannsack.com
