Windows 7: pst file now tearing my hair out

As I mentioned above, you can't import the .pst file from a read-only source, such as a burned disc. Don't ask me why Outlook needs to read and write the data just to export, but it does. I've been working with .pst files for a decade now, and it is one thing I've never been happy with...that I can't send a person their .pst on a disc, and have them import right from the disc. I have to walk them through copying the to their desktop first, then importing.

Just as an aside, some of those usb drives are not formatted ntfs, instead they are formatted so that
the maximum file size is 2gigs. so I always check the format to make sure they are ntfs.

Learnt a lot here today and certainly did not know about not being able to Import from a CD or DVD.

Normally when doing past XP reinstalls, I have burnt the existing .pst to a DVD before wiping XP and then copied from it overwriting the newly formed .pst.

This I could not do with 7 as I could not copy the .pst file as access was not granted.

I found a clear procedure on how to change File Ownership & Permissions on the related Folders which would have meant not trying to Import from a CD in the first place.

Using my Laptop as a bit of a learning machine before I install Windows 7 onto our 2 XP PC's.

Don't go altering permissions like this. That will put you on the fast track to issues. You never need to do this, and even if you had reinstalled XP, the .pst files should always be imported properly.

I agree but I have other programs e.g. Google Earth with data files (My Places) which I will need to copy across to such Folders within W7 where default Owner/Permissions will not allow and as far as I can tell and such programs/software do not have an Import/Export facility?

Can always revert Ownership/Permissions back after copying data?

This is not a .pst issue though.
