    the address is not found

I am hoping someone may be able to help having spent a number of hours for something I think is very simple, but may be wrong !

I have a Windows 7, IE 8 laptop and upto a couple of days ago was working fine. I dont think there has been any Windows updates applied, none that I can see and I have run my Spyware Doctor virus scanner and it has come back clean, I have also deleted the Internet history and everything with it. I have also reset the Internet settings back to the default, not that I was aware that I had changed any.....I have looked through this site and the searched the internet looking to see why I always get the message "The address is not valid", to any web address I enter, the results returned I have checked the suggestions, but either nothing is wrong or it makes no difference.

I am also posting this from another laptop running Vista and IE8 working without any problems....I have also checked the laptops side by side the Tools Internet Options and can not see anything different between the machines

    Can anyone please help ?

What happens if you enter 74.86.171.210 into the address bar of the problematic system?

Try going to Tools --> Internet Options and then click on the "Connections" tab. After that, click on "LAN Settings" and ensure that nothing is checked in that window. If something is checked in there, then uncheck everything and click "OK" and "OK" again. See if that resolves the issue or not.

Having looked at Tools --> Internet Options and then click on the "Connections" tab. After that, click on "LAN Settings".....I can confirm that no options are checked and no values are in any of the other fields.

As for supplying ipconfig /all for both machines, please see as follows............

Laptop that WORKS is attachment paul_ipconfig.txt

Laptop that DOES NOT WORK ia attchment emily_ipconfig.txt

Both files look OK, and when compared to mine (which obviously works), there is no difference at all. Do you have the problem if only the problematic laptop is connected (unplug the one that's OK)?

I can connect both laptops to the router at the same time and one works and one does not....if I then switch the cable from the one that is working to the one that is not....it still does not work, so rules out router ports and cable.

When did this issue start happening? Was it recently? If so, you may want to try a System Restore to before this happened to see if that corrects the issue. Also, if the computer has another browser (Chrome, Opera, etc.) installed, is it able to get to the internet?

In a command window, try to "ping google.com" (w/o quotes) or "ping 209.85.175.147". That should check internet connectivity with and without a DNS lookup. If it doesn't work then I'd check the network settings in the "Network and Sharing Center".
