Turn off "AutoComplete to remember web form entries" pop-up in IE

I've been using IE9 beta for a couple of months and have a minor issue concerning AutoComplete. I have it turned off via Internet Options. Every time I use IE9 to search for a website I get a pop-up at the bottom of my screen asking if I want AutoComplete to remember web form entries.

I used Option 3 to see if I needed to edit the AutoComplete registry entry but it's not even showing.

I have a habit of clearing cookies whenever I turn off my computer so I thought this pop-up was cookie related. It's not. It still shows up even if cookies have not been deleted. Is this just an annoying glitch in IE9 or do I need to configure some other setting?

Hello Lee,

Not sure if just clicking on No in the pop-up alone would stop it from popping up again.

This tutorial is not really for that, but you might see if using step 2 in OPTION TWO may be able to stop the Auto Complete message from popping up again afterwards.

Thanks for the quick response, Shawn. Clicking on No in the pop-up had no effect. (Tried it several times in the past.) Went ahead and merged the .reg file and it added AutoComplete under Internet Explorer. The right pane now shows Append Completion = no. Checked a couple of random websites and the pop-up still appears.

Any other thoughts on how to get rid of this annoyance? And my apologies for posting this under the tutorial. I debated about whether I should post it under Browsers & Mail. If you think that would be a better choice...

You might see if checking the Address bar box in AutoComplete Settings, unchecking everything in there, uncheck the Address bar box, then click on OK may work.

No joy. Pop-up still occurs. The only thing that's changed is instead of having grayed out check marks under Address bar I now have no check marks at all. Just when I think I'm getting a handle on 7 and IE9 something new appears.

Think I'll refer to it as a nag notice from now on.

It happens whenever I search for a website using IE9. Doesn't matter if I use a default search engine as my home page or if I leave the home page blank and use the IE9 address bar for all my searches.

I forgot to mention, I'll also get the nag notice if I visit a website that's bookmarked.

I've been doing some more digging and found out my registry is missing some keys/DWORD values.

I don't show AutoSuggest (first link) nor do I have IntelliForms (second link.) I'm at work right now and it will be several hours before I return home. I'm going to try adding AutoSuggest = no and IntelliForms with a new DWORD AskUser = 00000 and see what happens. Just out of curiosity, does your registry have AutoSuggest and IntelliForms / AskUser?

Thank you for the link, Irene. I'm thinking this issue has something to do with IE9 not adding certain keys / values to the registry. If I uninstall 9 and go back to IE8, everything is good. I can turn off AutoComplete from the Settings dialog box and I don't get any annoying nags asking if I want AutoComplete to remember web forms. It'll be several more hours before I'm back home to try out my theory of adding the new key and DWORD values.

Irene's link explains how IE9 should work. I would imagine that IE9 has a reset feature similar to the one in IE8: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset.

I've done several fresh installs of IE9. The only "change" I've implemented has been Internet Options > Content tab > AutoComplete Settings button > uncheck all AutoComplete options, which should turn AutoComplete off. At least it does in IE8 and I don't get any nags asking if I want to turn it back on. But the nags do appear in IE9. Using "reset" merely restores the check marks to the AutoComplete Settings options. Only with AutoComplete "enabled" do the nags stop.

Brink may be your best bet at figuring out why your system has this problem with IE9 but his does not. I'm sticking with IE8 until IE9 is no longer beta.

I'm hoping he'll have some success. This is the only remaining issue I have with IE9. I'm just being mule-headed trying to figure out why the AutoComplete nags are happening.

If you're deleting cookies regularly, why don't you just enable AutoComplete. If I'm not mistaken, those entries will just go away when you delete your cookies (or was that internet history)...

Shawn, thank you for that added information. Just to bring everyone up to speed, I edited the registry as follows:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete
"AutoSuggest"="no"
"Append Completion"="no"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms
"AskUser"=dword:0x00000000 (0)

The registry originally had Append Completion=no, but it did not have IntelliForms or AskUser. Once the new registry key/values were added, I also showed Use FormSuggest=no (as suggested by Shawn's detective work.)

For the first time since I installed IE9 beta, those nagging, constant prompts asking if I wanted AutoComplete to remember web forms has ceased.
