For checking updates you can simply click the WU option on the Start menu or go into the Control Panel>Automatic Updates and click the link on the popup which in turn opens IE upto the MS update page for express or custom options.

Besides one recent update for IE 8 the only other one seen lately is one for the Integrated Components I just go on here. The atttached image shows that one.

There is no problem with the basic Windows 7 32 bit host updating. The question is are the updates necessary in the XP Mode 32 bit.

I don't see why they are necessary but are released to improve things like the Integrated Components feature and IE 8 updates. As far regular XP updates you won't be running into any more of those since that's the OS.

Of course you could download the MSU version of any update if available on another machine and then transfer by flash drive to the 7 host even VPC to see installed manually on the XP Mode. The MS Security Essentials and any other addons however would be lacking however without a working connection through IE in order to receive their regular periodic updates.

Unless a specific update is required to install something or correct an existing problem typically you can run most things like they are but simply end up losing out on any improvements or fixes seen with them. But after not having run the XP Mode for some time the only updates seen were the one for IE 8 and the other for the IC. I doubt you will have anything to worry about except other addons.
