Windows 7: FF4 alongside FF3

FF4 alongside FF3

There is one set-up that I've been using that got broken after I've installed FF4 and I can't see what went wrong.

I used to run two instances of FF - FF 32-bit and FF 64-bit. To get them both working at the same time I have created two profiles. The way this worked, when I start FF I'm prompted to choose a profile. This used to happen also when one instance of FF was already running.

Now, this set-up got broken. When FF4 is running, clicking on the shortcut for FF3 64-bit results in another FF4 windows and vice verse.

Any ideas?

Double check the target location in the properties for each shortcut and make sure they are pointing to the correct exe. And while you're there add -p (with a space after the ", will look like this, "C:\Program Files\Minefield\firefox.exe" -p) to get the Profile Manager back.

In addition to what stormy has posted, this applies to installing a beta version side by side with a stable version, but I found step #7 to be interesting.

7. If you want to launch this "version" while another version of Firefox is already running, add space-no-remote to the end of the Target line, after this "version" has been run at least once.

You might want to try adding space-no-remote to each target line.

I know that it is possible to have and use multiple browsers on a single computer, e.g. IE9/FF?/Chrome/Opera etc, but I don't know whether it is possible to have different incarnations of the same browser. Certainly, this is not possible with IE, but I don't know about FF or any of the others.

Excellent! It works! I'm still confused as to why I did not have to do that before, but the main thing is, I have my browsers back. Thanks!

I used to do it with Firefox 3: I would run Namoroka (unofficial x64 build) alongside the usual FF 3.6.xx. Apparently, Firefox 4 is a bit more picky in this respect, but adding these additional switches to the Firefox command resolves this and they are happily coexist again.
