Hosts file looks good! Here's mine
Quote:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
Are you still being redirected?

Sorry for the delay in reply. Your reply came in at 4am local time.

Yes. I am still being redirected. The problem seems to have ceased with Chrome and Flock, but is very much present in both Firefox and IE. I can see the URLs automatically changing to 'nohginrotgea' as I type 'goingonearth'.

I read in TechSupportForum that Avira antivirus can be of some help. But the steps leading to the identification of Avira as the remedy is lengthy. Hence I haven't tried it yet.

I'm planning to change all my finance related passwords from my desktop (another computer at home).

Update: Ran a full scan using Avira Antivir and it removed some files. Everything is fine for the time being. :-)

That sounds bad. You could try adding one like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Use Notepad with the above line and save with the name "HOSTS" without quotes or a file extension. (You may see other versions with many lines preceded by "#", however those lines are informational and ignored by Windows.)

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

C:\ = OS drive... might not be C:

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

Edit: I cannot see the hosts file in system32 folder even though 'Show hidden files' is selected.
To make changes to the Host file you must start Notepad with the Run as Administrator command > open file & navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc .
To see the Host file change the "Text Documents button" to All files make any changes
you need & save.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I didn't know about your posts and hence the delay in reply. Apologies.

Anyway, I sought help from techsupportforum and solved the issue with Combofix + ESET online scan. Guess it was some adware issue.
