I find Firefox 3.6 to be the fastest of all which I have tested on my dodgy machine!

Since 3.6.4 its got slower and slower on my machine, although at least still 3 times faster than IE9. FF 4.0 is a whole 25% slower and 30% larger! I don't think I'll be rushing to update. Apart from the fact my skins don't work on 4.0

I found it to be about even speed wise with FF4 for the most part (except on SSL sites) and its memory consumption is light-weight compared to FF4. I'm back to using 3.6 again, after having tried out 4.0 and then 4.2.

I don't watch videos online/play browser games, I mostly do research and forum viewing-- so all of the hardware accelerated features in the new version aren't a must have for me

Have you tried standard diagnostics and/or a new profile?

That's testing with Peacekeeper. Cynical me would expect a FF speed test to show it's the best thing since sliced bread. And all tests are done in "vanilla" profiles. No add ons, except the mere basics to get the test to run (ie Java).
Last tests done on the 1-4-2011. FF 3.6.4 returned a pretty consistent score of 2973. 3.6.6 returned 2815. 3.6.16 returned 2423. FF 4.0 returned 1867. IE9 returned a paltry 893. Used to get (if it decided to work) c.1400 with IE8. Chrome returns something in the 41/2k mark. Don't like chrome though. Have to draw a line somewhere! All tests done during a quiet spot in web traffic. e.g. 03:00hrs local time.
As a luddite I was more than happy with IE7. Upgrading to Win7 ended that relationship though. NOTE!! These are my own personal observations!

Well at least Mozilla already has 5.0 in their mind. It is scheduled for release in June... IN MY BIRTHDAY!

That's how they schedule releases you know.

They randomly pick someone they don't know, find out their birthday and then announce that's when they are going to release something, just as a special birthday gift to that one person
