Default Media Player for wav in browers

I wasn't sure which section to post this but since it has to do with browers I'm posting it here.

I primarily use I.E.9 but the same thing happens with Firefox and Chrome.

When I click on a wav file on a web site to play the wav file, Quicktime comes up and plays the wav file, even though Windows Media Player is set as the default for wav files. If I disable the Quicktime add on in I.E. I can't play the wav files and I get a message about Quicktime add on needs activated. If I click on an MP3 file Windows Media Player plays the file. I would like WMP to play wav files too, I only have Quicktime because I have iTunes (for an iPod) and a couple of other programs (such as Discus) require it. For years I refused to install Quicktime as it was on my "ill behaving" programs list because of issues such as this.

I suspect it has something to do with MIME but I have no idea how to change that.

If I uninstall Quicktime then WMP plays the wav files, but as noted I need QT because of the installed applications that require it.

In the Firefox menu bar, click Tools, the select options.
In the Options window, select the Applications tab.

Scroll to the File Type and change the Action to use the program of your choosing.

There should be similar options available in your other browsers as well.

I've tried that in I.E. and it just opens the Windows Default Programs panels, which WMP is set as the defult for wav. I tried it again and got it to work but instead of just checking "use my default player" in the "Set Program Access and Default Programs" I had to select the WMP as the default, even though it was set as the default.

    Another Windows "gotcha".

I have set/changed again the WMP settings but that didn't work or override QT. The fix was in the default programs as I noted.

I'd mark this as solved, but I've never been able to figure out how to do that and I've been on here for over a year.

click on the red triangle with the exclamation point - it is in the upper right corner of the post.

type in "resolved" in the message box then click "send report"
