Cant download anything since changing to IE9

I downloaded the IE9 update a couple of weeks ago, and since then I can't download anything from anywhere. I can't download files from the web, I can't download pictures that are attached in emails I receive in Hotmail or anything. If I click on anything that leads to a download, IE9 stops working and a pop-up message tells me the same. Then it shuts down all instances of IE, and restarts one browser.

Anybody else having this problem? How do I fix this? I'm running Windows 7 (obviously) on a HP laptop.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Phil

If you saw a bad install that might explain one possible problem. The new version of IE now uses a download tool bar seen at the bottom of the screen prompting run, save, or save as to a folder if not desktop.

The tool bar also serves as an information bar being a new modular dual purpose item over the old popup in center of screen. You may want to look over any IE protections, firewall, av as well as the possible uninstall and fresh second attempt if you did end up seeing a bad install.

Here I had to revert back to 8 due to problems with 9 on one site I frequent being a slight setback. Otherwise it was running flawless for the most part.

The download toolbar you mentioned doesn't even appear. IE9 just freezes up as soon as I click on anything that would initiate a download.

The install went smoothly as far as I know. I could uninstall and reinstall, but how do I do that once I have no more web browser? I'm not much of a computer guy...

I think that uninstalling IE9 and then reinstalling it is a good idea, because you may very well have gotten a corrupted IE download. Here's some help for you:

    Internet Explorer 9 - Uninstall
How do I install or uninstall Internet Explorer 9? (from Microsoft)

To uninstall IE9 use the following steps:
    1. Close all programs.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Click Uninstall a Program under the Programs category
    4. In the Tasks pane, click View installed updates.
    5. In the list of installed updates, double-click Windows Internet Explorer 9.
    6. In the Uninstall an update dialog box, click Yes.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    7. Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 9.
    8. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
    9. After you restart your computer, open Internet Explorer.
    10. Click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. If Internet Explorer 7 or 8 appears in the About Internet Explorerdialog box, then you have successfully completed the uninstall.

I just followed your instructions and then reinstalled IE9, and I'm still having the same problem. I think I may revert back to IE8 soon if nothing else works.

You may want to check out IE9's Compatibility View settings as it would appear some web pages have compatibility issues.

    I installed IE9 and discovered I couldn't open my Sky e-mails.

Right-click the top of your browser window in IE9 and select the Menu bar.

Click Tools/Compatibility View settings and add each troublesome web site to the Compatibility View window.

When you go back to the web site's home page you may get a nagging prompt that you have selected Compatibility View - just dismiss it and see if you can use the page.

I noticed a few things while IE 9 was on here when going to different sites as well. On one when you went to type anything the text would jump up a line which became a regular annoyance. I'm hoping the gradual updates seen will help with a few of those that seem a bit minor in comparison.
