I see this in basically all usage statistics online. I have come to consider it normal. Just as my personal benchmarks are usually much higher than what I see posted by similar systems online.

The questions are what criteria is being used to obtain these statistics. As it's basically impossible to tell what everyone on the internet is using there simply is no localized database that contains those figures.

At the end of the day you could walk into a room full of people with colds and determine that everyone on earth has the sniffles.

W3Schools data is of hits/visitors to their website.

StatCounter data is of hits from three million sites (according to Wikipedia).
W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to the browser that comes preinstalled with their computer, and do not seek out other browser alternatives.

These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is a more popular browser.

Anyway, our data, collected from W3Schools' log-files, over many years, clearly shows the long and medium-term trends.

    Both sites are being truthful.
If you read the wiki link it gives many reasons why browser figures may not be accurate.
The demographic of W3schools users has 41% of users coming from America & another 24% from Asia, in both regions according to Statcounter Internet Explorer has a healthy lead over Firefox.
