FireFox Tab problem

For some reason i cant open a new tab unless i hit ctrl T and when i do, i get a powered by Ask thing. what do i do? This just randomly started happening.

You can also just double-click in the empty space on the tab bar, if you prefer not to have extra buttons.

Otherwise it looks like you may have inadvertently installed the Ask Toolbar at some point. If this happened recently you probably didn't notice a sneaky preselected checkbox for the blighter, that came with something else you installed.

The easiest way to be rid of it is to use AutoClean's ASK Toolbar Remover.

The removal didn't seem to work, adding in the new tab thing moved it to the left of my tabs when i want it on the right how it usually is, and i still have the 'New tab powered by ask' thing when i open a new tab

Sorry to hear that- it may be a version not supported by the AutoClean tool?

In which case here are some more options which I suggest you try in the order given...

1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and in the Uninstall or change a program list - uninstall any entries for Ask/Ask Toolbar.

2. Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs > Manage Extensions

And/Or

Control Panel > Internet Options > General > Change search Defaults

And remove any entries for Ask.

3. In Firefox go to Tools > Add-ons and look under Extensions for 'Ask' and select Remove if found there.

Restart Firefox and test?

Ask can be installed by itself or with some Firefox extensions. In which case it's not always easy to remove manually. What follows are the steps I used a couple of months ago to rid a family member's Firefox install of this pestilence- however you continue at your own risk...

1. In Firefox open a new tab or window and type “about:config” (without the quotes) into the address bar. A warning will be displayed and you can click the button marked "I'll be careful, I promise" to continue.

2. Enter the phrase "Keyword.URL" (without quotes) into the filter/search bar at the top, and hit Enter. Right click on the entry and select “Modify”, then change Ask.com to- "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&q=" (without the quotes).

3. Enter the phrase "browser.search.defaulturl" (without quotes) into the filter/search bar at the top, and hit Enter. Right click on the entry and select “Modify”, then change Ask.com to- "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&q=" (without the quotes).

4. Enter the phrase "extension.snipit.chromeURL" (without quotes) into the filter/search bar at the top, and hit Enter. Right click on the entry and select “Modify”, then change Ask.com to- "http://www.google.com/search?&q={searchTerms}" (without the quotes).

5. Next, in the Firefox search bar, click the 'down' arrow and select "Manage Search Engines. Click the entry for Ask to highlight, and then hit the remove button.

Restart Firefox and test?

If you get to here and have not managed to remove Ask completely then I suggest you email Ask.com support for further help.

Once you have removed Ask we can look at the new tab button/position, etc.

Ok... As far as I know there is no way to do this in the Firefox settings (if anyone knows differently then I'd love to know how please).

The only way I know of is to install the Tab Mix Plus extension.

Once installed- go to Tools > Options > Tabs > Tab Mix Plus Options (top-left) > Display > Tab Bar

Under "Show on Toolbar", check the box "New Tab Button" and select "After Last Tab" from the drop-down menu- and click apply.

It's a great extension that gives you a lot of control over your tabs, and you can customize the tab menus among other things. I've used it for years and never felt it drags on Firefox any. There are other +tab extensions, though from what I've read some users have had conflicts with these on account of other extensions they have installed.
