Gary, it would seem if disabling addons fixes it, it isn't a browser setting. Did you try enabling 1 addon at a time, and testing each before enabling another? If you think JS is involved, you can try changing scripting options.

Tools> Internet Options> Security> Internet> Custom Level

Also, you might add 7F to your trusted zone if you haven't already

Tools> Internet Options> Security> Trusted Sites> Sites> Add url to list

Before you consider a clean install, you could do the Reset IE option in Shyams restorator tool.

I was just suggesting that to see if that would help, completely removing it instead of disabling it.

Just trying to help you narrow it down, since that error you posted had references to Java, at least according to the other Klingon I found.

I'd bet it has something to do with having that Norton AV installed.

Seems a rather odd and isolated set of circumstances that you can't seem to get around.

I agree Aaron, it odd. However Norton has given me no problems in the past years. This all started after I had installed a little program called Stioc Jokesters T-Clock, which allowed the clock in the task bar to have different formats and colors. About a week after I installed it my system came to a crawl, then a bit later Norton squawked about it being a trojan. That initiated the first clean install, which is when this problem started.

As a doc Brown science experiment I have removed Norton Internet Security 2011 with the norton removal tool and removed left over registry Symantec/Norton entries. Still no change, the snips still open at the top of the page, can't be X-ed out.

Out of interest have you tried a different browser , if the problem persists its not a IE issue.

Yes Boobah, I tried IE9 but none of the off-brand ones.

I think I finally figured this out, I'll have to reinstall Norton to be sure. I have DivX plugin and web player in addons, with them disabled all is well. DivX has two versions, I suspect I downloaded their beta by mistake because I had it before when everything was working.

Thanks again to all who replied.

EDIT: Norton reinstalled and all is working correctly.
