When I type www.localhost, where is index.html
I have asked this question on other news groups even Microsoft. Why is this such a hard question to answere. I have installed Apachi web server on my PC but when I type www.localhost into a web browser, I find myself looking at a difrent file.

Try typing just localhost and leave out the www. That may work. If not, you can try typing 127.0.0.1

Got the t-shirt. I am a website developer. I know about 127.0.0.1.
I have a samsing 800G hard disk. Where is index.html. That is the problem. Where would bill gates put it. I assume it would be in a folder called htdocs/
When I said I typed in www.localhost, I DO get a web page displayed. Problem is locating that page.
Which browser are you using? I was curious and typed "www.localhost" into my address bar in Firefox. It automatically changed to "www.localhost.com" and that site, whatever it is, gave me a 'connection was reset' error.
If you're actually able to load something from "www.localhost" then you must be running a local webserver on your computer; there's no other way. Neither Mr. Gates nor the size of your harddisk will have anything to do with it, nor am I quite sure why you think there's a folder "htdocs."
Describe the page you're seeing. What does it say? Better yet, can you show us a screenshot of it?

If I open a browser like firefox or internet explorer and type in the url of a website and it comes up with a page does the website exsist? Yes it does. If I type www,localhost or 127.0.0.1 and a web page does apear with a welcome message does this page exsist. You say it does not exsist but if you search the internet you will fond information on this topic. On a new IIS instalation it would point to something like htdocs/index.html. it would be a html page. You thinkt that the page that I am looking at does not exsist anywhere not even on my local hard disk. This is very strange.
I remeber years ago when XP was out adding IIS to it and I definatly had a folder and file index.html created with a default page created. I could edit this page and even create a loacl website for development issues. But you seem to think that the page I am looking at in my web browser does not exsist.
I simply missed the part in your original post saying you were running Apache, that's all.
Still not quite clear as to why you insist on typing www.localhost and not simply localhost, though. You also haven't said what the page looks like or what it tells you, yet.
Have you consulted the documentation for Apache to find an answer to your question? I'm not familiar with either Apache or IIS myself.
