Revert back to a pre-4 version? Not recommended though.

    Use a Persona?

Find a skin, or use stylish?...

Restyle the web with Stylish! - userstyles.org
The persona was an easy solution for me. The window still wastes a lot of space but at least now I can read the menu easily.
