    All web browsers stop downloading data every few seconds


    For the past few days, I've been having a problem with my internet connection.
    When trying to access a website, my browser stops opening the site after a few seconds. Instead of going to a page reading "the connection has timed out," the page continues to load at a rate of .01 kb/s.
    I've read that such problems can result from anti-virus programs, so after running scans with both McAfee and Malwarebytes, I disabled them both.
    For about a minute, everything returned to normal, but then the problems started again.
    I've also entered "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" into command prompt, which had no effect.
    There is one other Windows 7 computer on my network that it experiencing no problems. There is also a Mac and an XP on the network.

    Hey Blobman000, and welcome to sevenforums!

    Let me see if I can help you with this problem of yours.


    • Have you done any editing of the windows registry? There are commands, such as the one that you posted, that windows has preset and that I recommend not changing. If you are able to, try and change back to normal any of those settings that attempt to make the internet "faster"
    • I will link you to another thread. Try and follow all of those directions and see if that is able to help you solve some of your problems: Internet speed suddenly slow?

    Unfortunately, the fix described in the other thread did not work.
    The command in my original post is the only one I've used.

    There were a few details I failed to mention in my original post:

    I've tried using Chrome, Firefox, and IE, and all of them have the same problem. However, Steam (a program for purchasing and managing games) has a built in web browser. As far as I can tell, the Steam browser works fine.

    After the problem started, I started a 60 MB text download. The download would run at normal speeds, but the download would freeze frequently, so I would have to pause and resume the download every few seconds.

    Other than the test download, the only file I've downloaded recently is an update for McAfee, which was just a few hours before the problem began, which leads me to believe it is somehow related to McAfee.

    You may very well be right about that. That program causes quite a few problems on this forum. Try this method:

    Warning! This method will completely remove MacAfee, but I recommend it

    How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)

    Trust me when I say you will want to remove it, it is absolutely horrible. If you are looking for a replacement, try this antivirus (free): Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

    If you want a little more protection, you can add Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download to it.

    Never have more than 1 antivirus ever installed on your computer. However, malwarebytes will work fine with most other antivirus software, so it is safe to download it and another antivirus software.

    If you are unable to download anything, try using a USB stick from another computer and installing from that. Cheers!
