Well, I downloaded "Firefox Setup 9.0.1.exe" and re-installed it. It's listed correctly now in "Programs and Features," version 3.6.8 is gone, and I then successfully uninstalled 9.0.1 and reinstalled it.

However, the screen remnants are still there!

    Any suggestions?

BTW, thanks, koolkat77, for sticking with me on this.
your screenshot shows that you're using the classic theme of windows

    may i know why:
    1) you are not using the basic theme of windows 7 OR 2) the aero theme of windows 7 ?

have you tried switching on to any other themes and see if the remnants go?

That's interesting. I'll try some other themes and see what happens. I just like the classic theme.

The problem does not occur in Aero themes or in Windows 7 Basic theme. Too bad. I think if I had to, I'd live with this minor annoyance and keep my Windows classic theme. I just don't cozy up to those newer themes, although I will continue to experiment.

    Hi.
    for testing purpose.
you could try creating a new user account, and change it to classic theme. see if the remnants are shown there too or not.

Maybe its to do with Hardware Acceleration you could try disabling it in Options>Advanced > General.

Thanks, Stve, that worked! But I'm wondering why. What would those remnants have to do with hardware acceleration??
