Rationalising Mail's Storage Folder

I'm now using Windows Live Mail in Win7 after using Outlook Express for over a decade - which I found quite satisfactory. To the extent that it is possible I want to continue email the way I had it in Outlook Express. I now have multiple copies of folders like Inbox, Sent Items, etc (at least two anyway). Well, if that is unavoidable, I will 'live with it'.
I've accidentally discovered that I CAN have a POP3 Gmail account, despite the instructions suggesting that IMAP is the only option. Because of that misinformation there were several attempts to import email from Outlook Express. But before the last import (after I had replaced the IMAP account with a POP3) I deleted all the previous imports.
In MAIL, Storage Folders display the names of folders I originally created in Outlook Express - so far so good; But they are all labled with (1); There is also duplication of some folders, the difference in name being enigmatic. Within folders everything is duplicated (or worse). As you might expect, in the actual Storage Folder some 10 subdirectories down from C:\, there is chaos - there are three folders, called : 'Imported', 'Imported (1)' and 'Imported Fo db4'. The first two have a full complement of Outlook Express' folders, although the ones in 'Imported' are empty; and the third acquires (empty) folders by some unknown trigger. Can I have some help to bring order to Storage Folder ?

My first attempt with MAIL resulted in a great deal of UNWANTED downloading from the web, when I had meant it to import from the Outlook Express Store. I thought I could avoid this by using POP instead of IMAP, and putting in appropriate restrictions. It now seems that MAIL has STILL been surreptitiously downloading from the WEB, because nothing else can explain the large bandwidth used since starting with MAIL; it's corroborated by the presence of so much duplicate mail. Is unwanted downloading not preventable ?

Are the duplicates visible within WLM from the imported messages from Outlook Express, or under the gmail POP3 account, or under the gmail IMAP account?

You don't need to worry about how the files look in Windows Explorer (C:\) as long as they look ok within WLM. Of course you do have the option to uninstall WLM and all the folders under Windows Live Mail under c:\ and start over.
