Issue opening websites, Facebook, MSN, Microsoft - IE9,FF10,Chrome

    Hi All,

I have an issue which many people have but there is no direct answer. I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine with Realtek PCIe Gigabit Network Controller (On Board). I have a DLink DIR300 Wireless router directly connected to my PC and have a PPOE Broadband connection. I am not able to open websites like, Facebook, MSN, Microsoft, VMWare to name a few. I have Comodo Antivirus installed and the Windows Firewall and Windows Bit Defender services disabled. Following troubleshooting steps have been tried:

    1. Hosts File looks ok with only the localhost entry.
    2. Ping returns the IP address with no drops in packets.
    3. Sites open perfect on my Laptop (Win XP) / Phone
    4. Have Java and Flash installed
    5. Installed updated drivers for NIC card from the Realtek Website.
    6. Did a flush dns and register dns
    7. Reinstalled Router Software.
    8. Tried adding public DNS servers.

In any browser, the status says connected by fails to open the page. Also on some websites if I click a hyperlink on the page, a new tab is opened and says connected to the page but the page stays blank. Only the title and the logo of the website come up. Please help it is very annoying.

suggest to remove Comodo Antivirus and give Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows a try.

    Same Issue

    Hi Buddy,

Thanks for the reply. But I removed the antivirus and tried the websites by not putting any antivirus. As mentioned Firewall and Defender is disabled. Also an update

    1. Did a fresh setup of Dlink by doing a hard reset.
    2. Did netsh int tcpip reset
    3. Did netsh winsock reset

Very frustrating that it cant even open VMWare.com, answers.microsoft.com, technet.microsoft.com

You could also try resetting your router.

Welcome to the Seven forums phrozenwire!

Excellent posts. Great details on what you have tried.

Have you tried booting into the safe mode with networking and then attempting to surf to the sites that are giving you trouble in the regular mode?

Have you checked in the Network & Sharing Center to see what's going on there?

You could try disabling your network adapter, and then re-enabling it.

Failing that, you could try uninstalling it, and then re-installing it.

Is this repeatable (using the same website and link) or is this a random thing? If random, try any number of ways to ensure that the connection to the net is not dropping out. Maybe a constant ping to Google or streaming/downloading something that shows in task manager's graph of the network traffic.

I've worked on one network where the router quit passing DNS info after a while. Restarting the router made it working for a while... but of course, that bad router impacted all computers on the network. So, when you cannot get to these websites on the W7 box, can you then reach them using your XP system right after the failure on the W7 box?

This is repeatable. For eg if i open this forum and click a link on it, it will say connected but will not display the contents. This repeats even if i refresh and clear cache and re run it.

Also I removed the antivirus after disabling the services and then safely removing it via Appwiz.cpl
