Firefox Autocomplete

    Firefox Autocomplete

I’m having a problem with Firefox’s autocomplete function in Google.

    For Google I use Google.com//webhp?complete=0&hl=en.
This turns off Google’s automatic query & fill function, and then lets me use the autocomplete of searches I've done before.

But it stopped working yesterday for no apparent reason. Maybe I accidentally hit a certain key, I don’t know. And it will not remember any new search words that I enter either.

But if I use Firefox’s Help > Firefox Help and start entering a word in it’s search box, my previous searches show up. And it will remember new search words that I enter. IOW my data is still on the PC, just not accessible via Google like it was.

When previously transferring programs & files to a new computer I found the autocomplete form data stored in a Firefox profile file named Formhistory.sqlite. And this file is still there.

All the settings in Firefox appear to be correct. Again, autocomplete still works in Firefox Help but stopped working in Google.

Any idea how to get it working again?

I'm having the same problem on chrome. The only thing I can imagine is that Google changed something again. I hope there's a workaround again though as that's how I get to most of the sites I go to.

(Yes I know it'd probably be easier to bookmark everything or start typing the url, but I'm more comfortable with typing in the first few letters of my favorite sites, clicking the autocomplete and hitting "I'm feeling lucky")

I'm not sure if it's Google problem or a browser problem. I realize the url is from Google, but I thought the autocomplete data came from Firefox (in my case). But I'll stand corrected if I got that wrong.

I seem to recall when I got a new PC about a year ago I spent some time trying to figure out how to transfer the autocomplete info into the new PC. Somewhere along the way I came across a Firefox profile file named formhistory.sqlite. I think I had to transfer it separately because I installed a new version of FF on the new PC. IOW I did not transfer the profile directory. But again that's what I seem to recall.

I still looking into the problem & will keep you posted.

Hmm, I'd figured Google had just changed the id for the search field or something and that this was resulting in me not having any autocomplete data for the new id. If the id wasn't supported by the autocomplete function then it wouldn't store new data.

I admit to having a very limited understanding of the subject though so it's all conjecture on my part.

It still may be a Google problem, but I did not see any problems on their website.

One of my friends uses FF and he is to call me later. I'll then go through as many settings as possible & see what if anything is different on my system.

I also posted on a Mozilla Firefox forum & hopefully I'll get a reply that solves the problem.

I have a couple FF profiles but I noticed when I changed some settings in one that it also changed the other. So using another profile did not work for me. I also tried IE8 and it does not work, but then I never tried it before so I don't know if it ever did.

    I'll post back here later.

I had my friend try google.com//webhp?complete=0&hl=en in his Firefox.
But it did not stop the Google auto query fill in on his PC, which is the exact same make & model as mine. He said his search entries got mixed in with Google's suggestions. I have no idea why the above url did not turn off Google's stuff.

I reinstalled FF over my existing FF, but that made no difference. I might try deleting first then reinstalling if I get no answers anywhere else.

I also deleted the data from one of my FF profiles & installed older backup files, but that made no difference either.

Hopefully someone on the mozilla forum will come up with an answer.

I also tried using FF on my laptop as well as chrome. Both attempts suffered with the same problem that I've been having on my desktop while the last time the laptop was booted up its autocomplete worked fine.
