    Firefox hanging frequently

Hello all. I'm using Win 7 Build 7100 and Firefox 3.5.2.

Since I installed Win 7 (about 4 months ago) I have experienced serious hang problems with Firefox. I believe its mainly occurring when I'm multitasking within the browser (e.g., multiple tabs open), but it is completely unacceptable. My hardware is more than sufficient (i.e., I don't feel the need to give detailed specs.).

Is this a problem that anyone else has incurred? Are there any suggestions for fixing it? The hangs will occur quite often during which I am unable to do anything in the browser, yet I'm able to use other programs, so it's clearly a Firefox issue. The hangs last anywhere from 5-15 seconds (very long).

    Thanks for any help!

diagnosing without specs is like surgury without hands. Keeping a hand tied behind our back doesn't make it easy

Nope thats fine. If I were you I would use FEBE (firefox profile backup addon) to backup my profiles then un-install and re-install Firefox. Just make sure you get used too febe before you actually have to use it

The root of many Firefox freezes is add-ons. They don't always work great, and sometimes they conflict with each other. Extended Cookie Manager and Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant are two that are notorious for this.

The best way to diagnose the problem is to disable all extensions for a little while to see if the freezing stops. If it doesn't, its not the extensions. If it stops freezing, then it is. If you figure out it is an extension, then try disabling then one at a time until you find the culprit.

PS... which version of FF are you using?

PPS... What is your firewall and a/v? These can cause freezing as well.

I disabled every single add-on and the problem persisted. I'm using Firefox 3.5.2 and NAV Beta for Win 7.

Any other ideas? This is painful.

I sympathize. I went through the same thing a year or so ago.

ZigZag's suggestion about a corrupted profile is a possibility. I had to recreate my profile a few times to fix annoying bugs, but that was back in my XP days.

Sometimes proxy settings cause trouble. Try setting it to "no proxy" instead of "auto proxy".

You could try emptying the temp folder (C: > Users > (your name) > AppData > Local > Temp).

If the freezes are happening when you try to open new tabs or links it can be your antivirus/antispyware apps. Some of them work by creating a big list of previously visited websites, and they won't open a link until after they've run through the list, comparing the new link to all of your old visited sites.

Have you checked out Mozilla's Knowledge Base? Try the things in Firefox Hangs.

Thanks. I've disabled NAV for now and will see whether that helps. My proxy settings are already set to "no proxy." I assume that changing that to the other setting won't be beneficial? Appreciate any additional responses.
