Use Postbox, they will be releasing a 64bit version very soon. (It's a thunderbird port).
Screw an app that they want you to buy. Thunderbird is free, and I can confirm that *extensions* that I run in my profile all the time work fine regardless of whether I have a 64bit Thunderbird or a 32bit Thunderbird installed.
Currently, I have Thunderbird 3.1alpa1 (aka Shredder), Tb 3.0beta4pre-release(also Shredder, go figure) and Thunderbird 3.0beta3 installed. All three run my profile of 12 email addresses (dual GMail, quadruple HoTMaiL, Yahoo, HotPOP, dual GMX, and my own domain email powered by GMail) and I am using IMAP for all the GMail and GMX accounts, POP for HotPOP and HoTMail, and 'pseudo-POP' for Yahoo, using the WebMail and Yahoo! for Webmail extensions.
My extension list in my Thunderbird profile:
Same set of extensions I always have installed - works in 32bit and 64 bit.Generated: Tue Sep 01 2009 01:22:19 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
