    Thunderbird For x64?

OK, so I'm trying to use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email application.

The version 2.0 installer from their website is of course 32-bit only, which doesn't help me out much. I went to that Mozilla x64 site that was linked in the "Free 64-Bit software" thread... well, that thing shows up as Shredder and not Thunderbird, and even though it's supposed to be x64, Windows wants to put it in C:/Program Files (x86)/

Any ideas? Why is that custom build so weird? Can I just get the official Thunderbird but compiled in 64-bit? Or the newest beta, whatever, but one that's actually the correct name?

Hmm weird I'm using the Mozilla Thunderbird just cause of how easy the gmail setup is and lemme double check 1 sec....

Ya its in the \Program Files(x86)\

Now I am using the 64bit Win7 and I'm guessing I downloaded the 32bit version of Mozilla and it seems to work 100% all the time I have never had a single crash or nothing so hmmm maybe I'm missing your question.

Anyway if you need some further help post again and I'll check back

Right, well, I know you can run 32-bit programs...

What I'm saying is I was looking for a native 64-bit version... where clearly the official one is 32-bit only.

If you mean you got thunderbird from Thunderbirdownload - Mozilla x86-64 then they are definitely 64-bit. If you open task manager and look at the thunderbird entry you wont see a *32 moniker beside it.

Because the versions of thunderbird/firefox on that site are alpha/beta builds they dont use the proper names of the programs but rather the project names. Shredder is the name of a particular project of thunderbird, just like shiretoko was for firefox.

So just to confirm, these are definitely 64-bit and you can check for yourself as described above.

One thing to bare in mind is that 32-bit plugins wont work for the 64-bit version of the programs.

The answer is very simple, and can be found all over the internet. Although the build of Thunderbird is indeed a 64-bit compatible build, the Installer used for Mozilla apps is still only 32bit compatible - and thus it gets routed to 32-bit land (aka Program Files (X86)).

Oh hm, well then can I make it say Thunderbird in the programs menu and title bar instead of Shredder?

And if the 64-bit ones don't work with 32-bit plugins, do you think it just makes more sense to use the 32-bit version of Thunderbird?

As for the installer being 32-bit... does that mean I can safely put it in the normal Program Files if I do go with that version?

Why not just download the normal version of thunderbird like was said up above it is infact 64bit just the installer is 32. And to confirm I am using Thunderbird right now and I checked the task manager and indeed it does NOT say *32 next to the application. As far as plugins go i ahvent really found any that I wanted that I wasn't able to run. Hope this helps!

    Good luck,

Wait, are you saying to download the from Mozilla's website, and it'll be 64-bit?

Or do you mean that custom-compiled one? And would I just change the install location to C:/Program Files since it's not actually an x86?

Hmm I'm not sure really I downloaded from the original site and it downloaded to the x86 folder but in the task manager it doesn't show a *32 marker so its up to you!

    Good Luck,
    Kukag!
