sfc /scannow did show a problem and also shows it fixed it after it ran the first time. When my Zone Alarm sub runs out in Nov I guess I'll use the Windows Firewall.

I think the problem may have been solved since it's been at least 30 mins and I haven't had any issues, they were coming much more frequent than that. The next step will be to uninstall Zone Alarm if I have to.

You "have a clue" & thus will be fine using MSE - as long as you are the primary user of this computer.

I've had to cleanup several computers that use MSE. Clueless users are landing on one of those fake infection "scanning" web sites... and they install the scamware to "clean" the computer. I usually grab a copy of the main exe causing the resulting infection and upload it to virustotal. MSE is always late to the party - the majority of AV tools have already identified the exe in question. [I also submit the exe to Microsoft.] Personally, I think that MSE heuristics need some work - no exe should be able to barf the registry like these infections do. But I still install and recommend MSE because there are too many problems with the alternatives. I just wish that MSE were a bit more aggressive.

    Seems problem is fixed

It appears that uninstalling Avast! free version has fixed the problem with the pop up error window "Internet Explorer has stopped working". I've been surfing for several hours without any pop ups. Ran sfc /scannow and it found some problems and fixed those but no change in the error message. Did a few other things also with no change. I really liked Avast! and it's a shame it couldn't keep up with Win7. Besides MSE I have MBAM free and the golden oldie Spybot.

I will mark this topic solved.

UsernameIssues, I am the only user on this computer, my wife has no interest at all. It's just her and I here at the house, there are no passwords at all on this box except for access to my router/modem (Cayman 3220-h, I know it's old but it works like a charm, and the price was right, it was given to me brand new in the box in 2001)

I am still using Zone Alarm Pro, as long as it continues to play well with 7 I'm staying with it.

Another job well done by all involved

I'm glad your back to happy computing.
Come back and visit often, you don't need to have a problem.
Please keep in mind. I recommend products for two reasons.
    1. I use them and they work as they should.
    2. Many very knowledgeable people here at Windows 7 Forum use them and report their quality.
I recommend against them because I or many people here have had lots of problems with them on a Windows 7 system.
