Updating IE9

Heh - can have much the same effect unless you know what you're doing (and I admit I really have no clue here!)

@Anak, et al: Yeah, Silverlight (SL) is a nuisance. I think Noel gave good advice - it sounds as though you follwed it. Now all you have to do is hide any future SL updates offered.

I'm just tahnkful the past two weeks are the past - too many things broke for lots of folks I know. The answer is not in the stars....... Oh hell it isn't

Spell Checker - you might want to check out Speckie - it has squiggly lines (configurable style / color?). It also supports other languages.

So why do my posts have so many mis-spelt words? I'm still battling other issues and move extra stuff out of the way. But I liked Speckie and will probably enable it again.

One thing that's driving me mad is an occasional line jump when editing. Words get cut and typing continues some where else. Ahhh, but that's another problem.

At (I think) Noel's suggestion, I uninstalled Silver Light, rebooted and checked for Windows Updates. Sure enough SL was there so I hid it. Checking again, it UNhid itself.

In my younger days I learned an apprenticeship to carve meat for human consumption at one of the local markets, it is all in focusing on the subject.

I will follow your sage advice Sb, I may try Speckie Yes! the last fortnight has been troublesome for a lot of folk.....

I have never installed Silverlight, and have the offer hidden. It is re-offered every so often. They will not take no for an answer

Silverlight "Why won't you just die!"

It only appears to re-offer SL, MS is persistent in trying to get it's own video technology front and center. I've installed it, uninstalled it, hid updates, restored updates, installed and uninstalled this sucker so many times.

I finally decided I just don't need it and uninstalled it - I'm sure it will be offered again at some point - I'll just hide it and continue to hide future SL offerings. As someone else pointed out - SL seems to only be on MS sites. So if you want to view a video offered in SL format - you can always click on the install presented at that time.

One of the problems is that there are 5 versions of Silverlight - the later ones are 'upgrades' which are supposed to replace the earlier ones - but the upgrades have updates as well, so you may be seeing varying updates, wwhich is why I said to recheck manually before hiding all SL updates again.
I know it does tend to show on most manual update checks, but WU is supposed to respect the hidden setting.

Do you mean to go to Windows Update in Control Panel and force a check for updates or some other venue like Windows Download Center?

Okay troops I have a big problem with IE9, it will only run correctly if I "run as administrator" (RaA) otherwise it starts, but is in a loop with the home page. FF 16.0.1 works.

If I have to RaA isn't that a permissions issue?
All users under IE9's Security tab have the same Permissions checked.

What happened? It ran great for a week an a half, now nada! the only change I can think of is last patch Tuesday.

I've tried different home pages it acts the same.

Created a shortcut from the .exe file, no luck.

Haven't been able to go much further. Have done some research.
It could be it needs reinstalled to repair.
I may need to create a new user account.
I may need to reinstall the OS.

Has anyone had experience with this?

It probably means that one of the Temp folders has lost permissions, but you're confusing em with your statement 'All users under IE9's Security tab have the same Permissions checked.' - there are no users in the Security tab (or are you talking about the Shortcut, or the executable, or what??) details count!

Do you have multiple profiles on the machine? If so, are the problems common to all, or just that one?
