Not to hijack thread but, anyone know an easy way to download a folder full of emails to the PC from hotmail? I've been dicking around for 4 hours trying all kinds of Thunderbird AddOns and open source proxy crap to download via POP3 and none of it works.

You can download and install Windows Live Essentials 2012. Once it starts to install it will give you an option to pick which applications you want to install. Pick Windows Live Mail Essentials. Once it is installed you set up your hotmail account.

Once it is set up you sign into your hotmail account. (at the top right is a sign in). It should bring in all your emails and all your contacts too.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've talked with other people that claim just entering in the POP3 info in Thunderbird works. So I have to assume either my hotmail is not authorized for POP3 access or there's some other glitch preventing me from logging in. At this point I've already wasted 6 hours. I don't care anymore.

Turned out Thunderbird can download everything if you move it to your Inbox first. I got to the bottom of the mystery. My password was corrupted and I got in via browser only because I had a cookie. Only took 1/2 hour fighting Captcha' to get a new password.

They make it so much fun now.

Glad you got your email back.

I'm not aware that they are phasing out those other services (I have Hotmail, Live Mail and Outlook). From within Hotmail you can click on "Options->Upgrade to Outlook" to use Outlook and within Outlook you can click on the Gear icon then "Switch Back to Hotmail" to use Hotmail.

Hotmail, live mail is not being phased out, it is just new accounts will be set up as outlook.com, old accounts will stay the same, so if you have a live mail account like I do you just sign in with it, but if you are creating a brand new one you will have to use @outlook.com
