    Zone Alarm has a firewall.
They may also have an Anti Virus - I don't know.
You need to figure out what version of Zone Alarm you are running.

    i don't understand this:

"at&t does use Yahoo mail, so while confusing, it should not be a problem.
You can try to sign in to at&t online email and see if your account is ok.
    https://cprodx.att.net/commonLogin/i...s&OLDSESSION=1"

why would i have an account with attt if it is no longer my isp?
In your original post you stated "my account is sbcglobal.net"
That is an at&t account, not Comcast.

comcast is my isp; i left att, so how do i have an account with them. anyway, i doubt if that is the cause of the problem because i have been operating normally with this setup for a year and this problem only emerged on march 13. my email address is sbcglobal.net. i am not sure any more just what an account is.

Just because you changed the ISP to Comcast does not mean your at&t(sbc) email account is automatically changed to a Comcast account.
I think you changed the ISP from at&t to Comcast and continued using at&t email without realizing it.

In post #12 I suggested you try to log into at&t email at:
    https://cprodx.att.net/commonLogin/i...s&OLDSESSION=1

Did you do this, and if so what happened?
If you log in you will see it's an at&t site, check to see if you can send an email from this site.

Zone Alarm does have a free AntiVirus + Firewall program.
Open Zone Alarm on your PC and see if it shows AntiVirus protection.
Here are screen shots of what ZA 2013 Antivirus + Firewall should look like:
ZoneAlarm by Check Point - Award winning PC Protection, Antivirus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware, Identity Protection, and much more.

I think you should be able to click on Help and see an About link that will tell you what version you have.
I don't use ZA, but that's the way most programs work.

In post # 12 I asked you to check in Control Panel > Action Center to see what firewall you are using.
    Did you do that?
If so, what do you see?
Also, what does it show for your Anti Virus ?

i attempted to log in to send email from att.net but could not remember my password and the help option asked me to questions that were not based on anything i had ever selected, were not questions i would have selected for answers that i could easily remember, so i could not log in.

yes i did check control panel action senter to see what firewall i was using. to my surprise it said none, although i had been using zone alarm for years and thought it was operating. so i turned it on. then, responding to directions given above, i turned it off again. still no ability to send email. then, corrected again above of the need for a firewall, i turned on windows defender. no change. then i changed to zone alarm again, thinking it not to be the problem as it had been in place for lengthy time during which this email problem did not occur. will go and again try to see what version i am running.
