I've tried and couldn't find a way. I'm still using Outlook 2003 as I have a list for a club that I maintain.

Hotmail is changed now to Outlook.com so this is how you do it in Outlook. A distribution list is called a Group in Hotmail.

    1. Click on the downward pointing arrowhead next the the word Outlook in the upper left of the screen which will drop down 4 tiles, Mail, People, Calendar & Skydrive.
    2. Click on the People tile.
    3. Click on the downward pointing arrowhead next to the word Manage in the top bar then select Manage Groups.
    4. Click on the + icon to add a new Group, type in a name for the Group, click on Apply.
    5. You will then see a list of ALL of your Contacts. Put checkmarks next to each person you want to include in the Group.

In Windows Live Mail, a Distribution list is called a Category so you add a new Category and then select people from your contacts to be included in that Category.

It looks like you may have clicked on "Add people" instead of "Manage Groups".

Thank you for that. We have created a group list with 17 people in it. We saved it as a "Draft" bet when we had a look at it, there is a box in which it says in red this address may not be valid?

We could not find any "Send" either which is why we saved it in "Drafts" The group name does not appear in our Contacts either so we assumed that if you want to use it, you call up the group from "Manage Groups" but what do you do after that. For a coiuple of new comers and novices, it's all rather confusing.

I have a group of friends I named as gang. When I want to send a message to all of them, I simply type gang into the address of a new message and hit send but I could just as easily find "gang" in my list of contacts and choose it.

    Distribution list in Hotmail

Thank you. We have put all; the names into a group box but cannot find out out to save them to contacts. and when we try we get what you see in the attached screen shot. it says it is an invalid address. Can you tell us what we are doing wrong please??

Once we have done this and we hit our version of gang will all the email addresses be visible on the email please?
