Windows 7: Nondescript icon has taken the place of the stylish E on IE8

Nondescript icon has taken the place of the stylish E on IE8

Hi Everyone,

My Internet Explorer (IE8) icon has switched from the stylish "blue e" to a bland generic one (the same one that is associated with "unknown programs"!).

Here is a screen capture of the icon that is pinned to my Taskbar!

Here is a screen capture from the actual programs (executable files) location (in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer)!

Notice in both of the above that the nondescript icon has taken the place of the stylish E!

Any ideas on how to get this icon back will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Hi BrightBlessings,

Thank you very much for your excellent directions. In the end I settled on the following (which I took from your link) -

1). Started the Command Prompt (Start > Search > CMD)
2). taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
3). DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A
4). start explorer.exe

Of course because the Explorer process is stopped the screen goes "blank" with the exception of the Command Prompt, this is nothing unusual, and the screen "comes back" after the last command is issued.

I didn't work this one out - Uber Props to ProactiveSvcs.
