Stuck somehow between IE9 and IE10. Cant run/install either.

I allowed the IE10 update to install. The installation appeared fine, however IE10 froze every time I tried to enter an address away from my homepage (about:blank). I uninstalled using the removal of update expecting IE9 to come back. The icons are there, but when clicked on i get a brief flash of a window and nothing more.

I tried reinstalling IE9 but that fails reporting it can't install as a later browser (or some files) is/are installed.
I tried reinstalling IE10 but that fails with an 'unknown error', so at the moment i seem sandwiched between browser versions.

System restore has been turned off for a long time as previously I have never found it to work succesfully on my system.

Any ideas please?

Maybe a repair install of windows might work and get IE 9 working again. Here's a link if you want to give it a try.

Repair Install

My windows would be quite unworkable if i followed that route to fix. I have many partitions for many purposes, and that just wouldn't help. I do have an entire system backup from shortly before the ie10 issues. I can't regrettably just recover the entire windows partition from backup as i would lose a lot. I can however recover files and folders, so if I knew what files/folders to recover i think i may fix this.

My ideal fix would be to return all IE9 files to their original locations from backup. I can recover registry to just before ie10 install which would be ok with me.

I appreciate your comment, however system restore as i mentioned, is not running on this system. When it was and i wanted to use it it never worked, so i turned it off entirely.

sfc /scannow has been run already and no problems identified.

The links are still there.

Running iexplore in either folder (32/64 bit) gives a brief flash of white on screen and nothing more (no process or anything else).

Nothing is contained in admin tools logs either.

The iexplore.exe properties show they are IE 10. I guess somehow the uninstall of 10 failed, and 9 failed to be rolled back to.

I'm having very similar issue and have attempted the above steps were you able to resolve?

Unable to restore as my previous restore points are gone.

Unable to install IE9 as it states newer version is already installed.

My difference is that I am able to run version 9 however I am not able to update it and therefore I am now exposed as I can not install any updates.

When I try to remove IE10 from 'Installed Updates' I receive error message, not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled.

I would seriously be happy to pay someone if they were able to fix this for me.
