Can't click auto suggestions on google

i'm running windows 7 and internet explorer 9 and whenever i start typing into google and then click on one of the suggestions in the drop down bar it closes the drop down bar and leaves my word half complete. if however i move down the list using the down arrow key then it will complete my word and search it but it's just a bit annoying that i cant click it with my mouse. any ideas?
