Firefox default, but links in programs open IE

Using FF 22 as default, but several programs I use (if not all), open IE nevertheless.
My e mail program The Bat! is one of them, they say their program just looks at the default browser.
    Should I change registry keys?
Is it a good idea to remove IE altogether?

    Try this:

Start> In search box type default programs> Enter> Set your default programs> Click on Firefox> On the bottom click on Set this program as default (or Choose defaults for this program if you want to choose specific defaults)> Save and OK your way out

See if this helps. A Guy

Alas, from some programs default is still IE.
Checked and rechecked Standard Programs, and all the extensions are linked to Firefox.
The only one still linked to IE is .url. (greyed out so cannot deselect).
    What else can I try?

Will it help to remove IE?
Or will the link just be dead in these programs then?

You can't remove IE, it is integrated into Windows. Certain things, like Windows update use IE to connect. That said, try this:

Windows key (the one with the flag) + R> In the Run box type

    firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser

    Enter

    See if that helps

    Didn't help...
    It's getting weirder:
In my e mail client (The Bat!) I can select two versions of every msg, "As text" and "as HTML".
When I click the pic in the mail I get IE, when I click the text version, I get FF.
    That's just one line: 2 Blu-ray
Well, at least there's a workaround...

Because IE is integrated into windows, it's always a possibility to open. If the creater of the program codes it that way, then it won't matter what is default. So that's a possibility. Or if a format is used that FF does not support (certainly html isn't one). The irony is, from Wikipedia for the very 1st The Bat! version:

1.0 Beta, the first public version, was released in March 1997. It supported folders, filtering, viewing HTML e-mail without the need to have Internet Explorer installed, and international character sets. It also had a special feature named Mail Ticker.
