    Thunderbird Install Error

Four days ago I updated Thunderbird to version 24.0. Now every time I check my mail I get this Install error:
Thunderbird could not install the search plugin from "chrome://opensearch/locale/searchplugins/wikipedia.xml" because an engine with the same name already exists.

I have to click that message 10 times to get rid of it.

Up to now I have not been able to solve this error message, so do you think completely uninstalling & re-installing would solve this? How can I be sure not to lose everything I have saved there?

That is not an error I've seen anything about, so I can only guess as to what might fix it.

The file is in the Thunderbird program folders, not in its profile, in the sub-folder searchplugins. I'd try renaming the existing file, to see if that fixes the problem--which I doubt, but ought not break any thing.

If that fails, I'd download the complete Thunderbird installer and see if a reinstall finishes properly. Reinstalling TB has no effect on your emails, etc., as all of that material is stored in the TB profile, not in the program itself.

Again, no guarantees implied nor offered, nothing more than a few suggestions as to what might fix an unusual problem.

I just updated to version 24 three days ago. I now have the same problem with Chrome search plug-ins errors. Tried a complete reinstall but that didn't help. Any other ideas?

Thunderbird -> Tools -> Add Ons -> Extensions

    Disable OpenSearch

This fixed the error message pop up I was receiving. For all 10 errors.
example: Thunderbird could not install the search plugin from "chrome://opensearch/locale/searchplugins/wikipedia.xml" because an engine with the same name already exists

    Restart Thunderbird.

Have a great day.. Hope it works for you!!
