We discovered this issue on 2 more desktops (every desktop we had . . . 4 in total, 2 xp 2 win 7). The problem is that the sound quality/loudness is no longer uniform and on some videos the sound has to be on maximum to hear and then on another video it must be turned down immediately it is so loud.

Does anyone know the source of the problem and whether Google/YouTube is addressing it. I have not heard a peep for them. Seems like an attempt to cover up a widespread issue.

My guess is it's not high on the charts of issues to resolve,
Fortunately for me I don't use Youtube all that much.
Youtube/ Current version of flash player it's anyone's guess at this point where the issue is ?
I would guess and say both

I just found this message on YouTube's website under "Known Issues"

"We're currently working to resolve an issue where videos start playing with the sound muted by default. As we investigate, please try adjusting the volume slider in the bottom left corner of the video player to enable sound. Alternatively, you can try viewing the video in HTML5 by opting into the HTML5 trial http://www.youtube.com/html5."

If the issue persists you might try clearing the flash cache:

I don't think it is the fault of Flash, but rather Youtube's coding. Google does recommend trying the HTML5 versions, but from what I read at Adobe, it's not on their end. A Guy

The sound has definitely deteriorated too. On most videos
I can hardly hear the audio. It's hard to believe that it was working fine for years then on last Friday it all implodes.

What is even more annoying is that there are no updates on the issue from YouTube/Google.

I agree that it is a Google/Youtube issue. Offered upddating Flash to eliminate it as a secondary cause, some people might benefit by the update.

I'm using IE10 and do NOT have a sound issue. I might have had it once a few days ago, but I'm not sure. If it did affect me, I think all I did was unmute the sound as opposed to only increasing the volume (of course I did increase the volume

I am not part of the HTML opt-in per: YouTube

I do have VideoLAN player installed which carries with it more codecs, but that is not the core issue, only thinking out loud.

Edit#1.... Resolutions found on Google forums:
Unmute and slide (from 2011) - Google Groups
Clean install of Flash - Google Groups

These might or might not resolve the issue since it's clearly a Youtube issue. If you can wait, wait. If not try a differnt browser or opt-in to the HTML5 trail

Edit#2.... I was also NOT logged into Google, rarely do I log in.

Mine is working now. Did just update Flash earlier. We'll see if that was it, or Google fixed it, or it will come back
